The short answer
A mural works best on one uninterrupted wall that people see from across the room, such as behind a bed, a sofa or a dining table. We prime the wall to a uniform, smooth surface, then hang the numbered panels from a plumb center line so the image lines up edge to edge without gaps or overlaps.
A wallpaper mural is one large image split into numbered panels: a tropical canopy, a city skyline, a watercolor wash, a faded map. Unlike repeating wallpaper, there is only one correct place for every panel, and if the first one goes up a quarter inch off, the error grows across the whole picture. Reliable Wallpaper Installer installs printed murals in houses, townhomes and condos across Miami Gardens and nearby cities in north Miami-Dade and south Broward. Below you will find how to decide if a mural fits your room, what the wall needs before printing day becomes hanging day, how we align and trim the panels, what makes one mural project larger than another, and how to look after the image once it is on the wall.
Is a mural right for this wall?
Ask two questions. First, can the image be seen whole? A mural behind a headboard, on the long wall of a living room, or at the end of a hallway reads as a picture. The same mural on a wall broken up by a window, a thermostat and two doors gets chopped into fragments, and the most interesting part of the scene may land behind furniture.
Second, does the scale fit? Large botanical prints can make a small bedroom feel enclosed, while fine detail gets lost on a two-story wall viewed from the front door. We look at sight lines from the entry, the sofa and the doorway before you finalize the order, and we can suggest where the focal point of the image should sit.
Kids' rooms, home offices behind a video-call chair, and condo living rooms that need one strong feature are all popular choices. In rooms with a lot of sun through sliding glass doors, ask the maker about fade resistance, because strong light will change printed colors over time.
Getting the surface ready
Murals are usually printed on thinner, more uniform stock than textured papers, which means every bump shows. We fill nail holes and anchor holes from old shelves, sand down patch ridges, and treat any area where paint is flaking. In many older Miami Gardens ranch homes, an interior wall may have been painted with several glossy coats over the years; those get scuffed so primer bonds.
Concrete-block walls finished with plaster can hold moisture, especially on the side of the house facing afternoon storms between May and October. We check for damp spots or efflorescence before priming, since a mural on a wall that is pushing moisture will eventually bubble.
The primer we use for murals is chosen for opacity as much as adhesion. A wall with a dark painted stripe or a patch of different color can show through light areas of an image, so the goal is one even, neutral tone everywhere the mural will cover.
Hanging the image panel by panel
Before any paste is mixed, the panels are unrolled on a clean floor in order so you can see the full picture and confirm nothing is misprinted or missing. Then the actual install follows a set sequence.
- Measure the wall width and height and compare them to the mural size, deciding how much overage to trim at each edge and where the key part of the image should land.
- Snap a laser or plumb line for the first panel, often at the center or at one end depending on how the mural was designed. Walls and corners in older homes are rarely perfectly straight, so we never trust a corner as the reference.
- Paste the wall or the panel, depending on whether the mural is paste-the-wall, prepasted or a traditional unpasted print.
- Set panel one on the line, smooth it from the center out, and check that the image is level at a horizon or edge.
- Hang each next panel by matching the printed image across the seam first, then butting the edges tight. On some murals the panels overlap slightly by design and get double cut.
- Trim the top, bottom and any outlet or switch openings with a sharp blade, keeping the edge clean along ceilings that may not be level.
- Wipe paste off the face with clean water and a soft sponge, then step back and check alignment from across the room.
What changes the size of a mural job
Every project gets an individual quote after we see the wall, but you can predict where yours will fall. A smooth, freshly painted wall in a condo bedroom is straightforward. A wall that needs patching, texture removal or old wallpaper stripped first adds a full prep stage.
The type of material counts. Non-woven murals are easier to reposition and remove later; vinyl-faced or fabric-backed murals are heavier and need different adhesive and more handling. A mural with fine geometric lines is less forgiving than an organic jungle scene, because a slight mismatch is far easier to spot in a straight line.
Size and height count too. A mural that runs over a ceiling soffit, around a corner, or up a tall stairwell wall needs ladders or scaffolding, extra planning around obstacles, and more time per panel.
Caring for a printed mural
Most printed murals can be dusted with a dry microfiber cloth. Washable versions tolerate a lightly damp cloth with plain water, but test a hidden corner first and never rub hard on dark ink. Keep furniture a few inches off the wall, since a headboard that bumps the surface every night will burnish the print.
Humidity is the main enemy in our area. Keep the air conditioning on, even at a higher setting, when you are away during summer. If a storm causes a leak or a seam lifts, let us know quickly; a lifted edge is a small repair when caught early and a replacement panel when it is not. Hold on to any spare panels or trimmed offcuts the maker supplied, and store them flat.
